Welcome and thank you for your interest in joining us at the Department for Education.

I would like to add my personal welcome to you and I hope that you will be inspired to join us. After 20 years working in procurement in the private sector, across a number of industries including, manufacturing, construction and latterly financial services, I wanted a change to work in an environment that was more personally and socially rewarding.

The opportunity to work in the Civil Service arose and was closely followed by the creation of the Government Commercial Organisation, which I joined in 2017. The opportunity to work on some of the most complex and high value contracts was a challenge that was just too exciting to turn down. A stimulating professional challenge combined with creating amazing outcomes for all of us in society. So whatever your background, either public or private, if you are passionate about delivering first class outcomes then come and join our journey.

This year the Department for Education (DfE) has launched a new social work agency, enabled three million citizens to undertake Apprenticeships via the National Apprenticeship Service, funded schools, academies and colleges to the tune of £60 billion each year. All to ensure that children and young people of England can study in institutions that offer more choice, whatever their background or location.

At DfE, you will have the chance to make a real and tangible difference to the country’s educational landscape and the lives of thousands of children and young people.

We work to achieve a highly educated society in which opportunity is equal for all, no matter what their background, class or family circumstances.

Our Department is responsible for:

  • Teaching and learning for children in early years and primary schools and for young people under the age of 19 years in secondary schools and apprentices in further education
  • Supporting professionals who work with children, young people and the education system
  • Teaching and learning at universities
  • Helping disadvantaged children and young people to achieve more
  • Making sure that local services protect and support children
  • Promoting lifelong learning and wider skills for an educated society

The Department for Education’s commercial function is going through an exciting programme to deliver a more commercially focussed culture, with measurable commercial improvements and efficiencies to the way we buy and contract to meet the Secretary of State’s ambition of making every pound count.

The programme will step up the Department’s commercial capability and professionalism in the management of its commercial activity, including grants and contracts. We will be embedding category management across the Department in traditional indirect areas such as Technology and Professional Services but also across specialist areas such as Curriculum and Standards Testing. We are one of the biggest buyers of construction services and have an exciting programme helping schools get the best value contracts.

Commercial Directorate sits at the heart of Operations Group and we are looking for experienced commercial people from both the public and private sector background to help us deliver this challenging commercial reform agenda. We hope you will be inspired to join our colleagues deliver the best possible outcomes for children, young people and the children’s and education systems.
